Different layouts suit different spaces, and some patterns are structurally stronger than others. Here's our complete guide to the most popular block paving patterns. ## Herringbone (45° and 90°) Herringbone is the most popular pattern for driveways and the strongest structural layout. Blocks interlock at 45° or 90° angles, creating a surface that distributes weight evenly and resists shifting under vehicle traffic. Best for: Driveways, parking areas, and any surface that takes regular vehicle weight. The 45° angle creates a more dynamic, visually interesting finish; 90° herringbone feels more formal and structured. Our recommendation: If you're paving a driveway in Blyth or Newcastle, herringbone is our default recommendation. It's the industry standard for good reason. ## Basketweave Basketweave alternates pairs of blocks horizontally and vertically, creating a woven appearance. It's visually distinctive and works well on patios and garden paths where the surface doesn't carry heavy loads. Best for: Patios, garden paths, and decorative areas. Less suited to driveways as it doesn't interlock as tightly as herringbone. ## Stretcher Bond (Running Bond) Stretcher bond lays all blocks in the same direction with staggered joints — similar to a brick wall pattern. It creates clean, linear sightlines and works well on narrow paths and modern properties. Best for: Paths, borders, and contemporary designs. Can be used on driveways when combined with a soldier course edge restraint. ## Stack Bond Stack bond aligns all blocks in a uniform grid with no offset. It creates a bold, geometric look that suits modern and minimalist architecture. However, it's the weakest structural pattern and isn't recommended for vehicular traffic. Best for: Feature panels within larger paved areas, patios, and purely decorative surfaces. ## Mixed Sizes and Random Layouts Using two or three block sizes in a random or planned layout creates a natural, organic feel. This approach works particularly well with tumbled or aged-effect blocks that mimic traditional stone. Best for: Properties in Bedlington, Cramlington, and other areas where a character finish is preferred over clean contemporary lines. ## Choosing a Border A contrasting border (soldier course) frames your paving and adds definition. Use a different colour or size block to create a clean edge that separates the paved area from lawn or planting. ## Colour Combinations Block paving comes in dozens of colours, from charcoal and slate grey to warm buff and rustic red. Consider your property's existing brickwork and roof colour when choosing.
