North East winters bring frost, heavy rain, and occasionally snow — all of which can damage your garden, driveway, and patio if they're not properly prepared. Here's our practical guide to protecting your outdoor spaces before the cold arrives.
1. Check Your Drainage
Poor drainage is the number one cause of winter damage across Blyth, Cramlington, and the wider North East. Standing water freezes, expands, and cracks surfaces. Before winter, check that all drains, gullies, and channels are clear of leaves and debris.
If water pools on your driveway or patio after rain, you may need drainage improvements before winter sets in. It's far cheaper to fix drainage proactively than to repair frost-damaged surfaces.
2. Repair Cracks and Loose Joints
Small cracks in paving or gaps in jointing compound allow water to penetrate the surface. When that water freezes, it expands and makes the damage worse. Inspect your block paving, patio slabs, and driveway for any damage and repair it before temperatures drop.
Re-jointing block paving with kiln-dried sand or resin jointing compound is a quick, affordable job that prevents expensive repairs later.
3. Protect Your Lawn
Give your lawn a final cut in late October or early November, setting the mower blade slightly higher than summer. Apply an autumn lawn feed that's high in potassium to strengthen roots against frost. Avoid walking on frozen grass — it damages the blades and creates brown patches.
If your lawn suffers from waterlogging, consider aeration or installing drainage. Alternatively, artificial grass eliminates winter lawn problems entirely.
4. Check Your Fencing
Winter storms are the biggest test for fencing. Check all posts for rot or movement, tighten any loose fixings, and replace damaged panels before the first storm. A fence that's slightly wobbly in autumn will be flat on the ground by January.
Concrete posts and gravel boards significantly extend fence life in the North East's wet conditions.
5. Clear and Tidy Borders
Cut back dead perennials, remove fallen leaves from borders, and add a layer of mulch to protect root systems. Mulch insulates the soil against frost and suppresses weeds that would otherwise get established during mild winter spells.
6. Protect Outdoor Surfaces
Applying a sealant to natural stone patios and Indian sandstone prevents water absorption and reduces the risk of frost damage. Sealed surfaces are also easier to clean and resist algae growth through the wetter months.
For driveways, a moss and algae treatment in late autumn prevents surfaces becoming dangerously slippery during winter.
7. Prepare Garden Furniture and Features
Store or cover garden furniture, disconnect and drain outdoor taps, and empty water features to prevent frost damage. Move terracotta pots to sheltered positions or wrap them in bubble wrap.
8. Plan Spring Projects Now
Winter is the ideal time to plan spring projects. Whether you're considering a new driveway, patio, or full garden transformation, booking early means you'll be first in the diary when the weather improves.
