What Happens When a Driveway Is Installed Incorrectly

The most visible sign of a failed driveway is sinking — patches where the surface drops, creating dips that collect water. This happens when the sub-base hasn't been excavated to the correct depth or hasn't been compacted in layers. Block paving that spreads or shifts indicates missing or inadequate edge restraints. Standard 50mm blocks are suitable for domestic driveways — 60mm or 80mm blocks are used for heavy vehicle access or commercial applications. Laying patterns include herringbone (strongest for vehicle loading), stretcher bond, and basket weave. Herringbone at 45 degrees to the direction of travel provides the best interlock and resistance to creep.

Resin-bound surfacing has grown significantly in popularity. A mixture of natural aggregate and UV-stable resin is trowelled onto a prepared base to create a smooth, permeable, weed-resistant surface. It's available in a wide range of colour blends and provides a contemporary finish. Resin-bound is inherently permeable, which can eliminate the need for additional drainage infrastructure and planning permission complications.

Indian sandstone and porcelain are premium options that create a distinctive, high-end appearance. Natural sandstone offers unique colour variation and character but requires sealing to prevent staining. Porcelain provides consistent colour, superior stain resistance, and a modern aesthetic but needs a full mortar bed and primed slabs for adhesion.

Tarmac (bituminous macadam) remains a practical, cost-effective option particularly suited to large areas or properties with multiple vehicles. Modern tarmac can be finished with a rolled chip surface for improved appearance and grip. It's the fastest material to install and can typically be driven on within 24–48 hours.

Gravel driveways offer the lowest material cost and natural drainage. We install them with a proper cellular grid system that prevents gravel migration, a geotextile membrane to suppress weed growth, and defined edging to contain the aggregate. Without these elements, gravel driveways quickly become muddy, uneven, and migrate onto paths and roads.
